Q:
Is it normal when you French kiss for the first time that it feels weird? Does this mean something's wrong with me?

A:
"French kissing" is a common way of expressing affection amongst people. We suspect that when you say it feels weird, what you mean is that it is a sensation coming from your body that you are not used to; that it feels different.

The mouth is a very sensitive part of our bodies. The reason people like to "French Kiss" is because the area is so sensitive. Some people like the sensation and find it very sensual and even sexually arousing. But, not everybody. Some people don't like the sensation at all. And people often don't like it unless they feel emotionally close to the person they are kissing.

Teens don't have a lot of experience with the different ways people express affection. It is very normal to try out things like French Kissing. You may decide, if you are emotionally connecting with the person you are kissing, that you like the sensation and it no longer feels "weird." You may decide you don't like it, even if you two are connecting. There is no right or wrong answer here.

With all issues of expressing physical affection such as kissing, teens should be sure they really do have an emotional connection to the person they are involved with. Doing something "just to do it" can make what might have been a good experience "feel weird."
