Q:
Is it necessary to have the surgery to make your inner vagina lip smaller if you don’t experience any rubbing or discomfort?

A:
You can relax – it is NOT medically necessary to have surgery on a vaginal lip that protrudes.

Many females have a one vaginal lip (usually an inner lip) that extends noticeably longer than the other. The protruding lip may be darker in color or seem thicker than the other, and this is probably due to friction. If the protruding skin is excessively long and causes symptoms such as pain or irritation, then the simple office surgical procedure (labiaplasty) can easily be done. But if you are not having any bothersome symptoms, then nothing needs to be done. The vast majority of women with a protruding vaginal lip never have surgery.
