Q:
I'm 18 years old for the past week I have had really bad back pain that just will not go anyway. When I feel down my spinal cord I feel a lump that really hurts. I'm scared I have cancer and I don't want to go to the doctor.

A:
There are lots of causes of a “lump” on the back other than cancer. Fortunately, cancer is quite rare at your age, and lumps related to cancer are often not painful. A more likely cause might be something as simple as an infected cyst. Whatever the cause, you’ll feel much better having this checked and treated by your doctor.
