Q:
Is it possible to become pregnant after anal sex? Is there any way I can prevent this? I'm in a relationship I know is monogamous and don't have to worry about disease and do not need a condom.

A:
We’re glad you asked, because too many people think anal sex is a safe way to avoid pregnancy. Sperm are incredibly vigorous swimmers, and if any leak out of the rectum they could swim through moist genital tissues, enter the vagina and result in pregnancy. It may not happen often, but once is all it takes.

The safest thing to do is use a reliable method of contraception, just as you would if you were having vaginal intercourse. Birth control pills, Depo-Provera shots and the contraceptive patch are excellent methods (for more information, click here. Even in a monogamous relationship, we would still recommend he use condoms during anal sex, to minimize any chance of contracting intestinal bacterial infections.
