Q:
Can I get pregnant or get sexually transmitted diseases, like HIV, from performing oral sex?

A:
Oral sex will not cause you to get pregnant; however you can be at risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STD). STDs such as HIV, herpes and chlamydia can be transmitted to and received from either person involved in the oral sex. The viruses or bacteria causing the diseases can enter and leave the body through saliva. Just because you may be engaging in oral sex and not vaginal sex does not make the act any safer. Use of condoms or dental dams is recommended during oral sex unless both partners are monogamous and have been tested free of infection. And if you and your partner are intimate enough to be engaging in oral sex, it is not unreasonable to presume vaginal sex may eventually follow.

We cannot say this often enough: sex is risky business. If you are a teenager considering it, be sure it's the right choice for you, the right relationship and use condoms and reliable birth control every time.
