Q:
I am 13-years-old and I think about sex and really kinky stuff all the time. I've tried telling my friend but she just looks at me funny, laughs and calls me boy crazy. Sometimes I even think about girls (not often). I want to have sex but I’m not going to until I’m married but I think about maybe doing other stuff. Is this normal and what should I do?

A:
Yes, it is very normal to be having lots of sexual thoughts at age 13. Your brain is being influenced by many new hormones, some of which are preparing your body to be able to get pregnant eventually. Sexual curiosity is part of this development. And to have sexual thoughts about both boys and girls is quite common in early adolescence. As you get older your sexual preferences will become clear, although it already sounds like you are most interested in boys. You are very wise to have decided not to have sex until marriage. We are not sure what you mean by “doing other stuff." As we have said many times, sex is risky business. Even short of intercourse, sexual touching and fondling can still result in exposure to sexually transmitted diseases, as well as put you in compromising situations. Be reassured that it is normal and healthy to think about sex, read about sex, and have sexual fantasies and dreams. Those are safe ways to explore your sexual curiosity. If you remain true to your values and wait until adulthood to actually engage in sexual activity, then you will be making very responsible choices for yourself.
