Q:
Will a doctor know if you inhale substances such as hairspray, nail polish or spray cans?

A:
Inhalation of solvents (huffing) is one of the most dangerous forms of substance abuse because it can affect almost every organ system in your body. Death can occur suddenly from asphyxiation (suffocation) or abnormal heart rhythms. Your brain, nervous system, heart, lungs and liver can be severely and permanently damaged.

Since these inhalants produce so many different effects, it may be difficult for a doctor to detect inhalant abuse without being told. If you are currently using inhalants, we urge you to stop immediately and seek help from your doctor, rather than keep this problem to yourself.

You're not alone. Take a look at a few of the quetions related to this topic that other teens have asked us.

  • Is inhaling that bad?
  • The kids at school say huffing is safe. Is this true?
  • Is it safe to sniff nail polish?
