Q:
I’ve had a sinus infection for a few months. My doctor has been treating it with antibiotics. I’ve had diarrhea for three months and haven’t had a period for that long either. Do you have any ideas why this is happening?

A:
Wow, you’ve gone through quite a lot these last few months! Your doctor has been treating your sinus infection with antibiotics, which not only kill the “bad” bacteria causing your sinus infection but also can kill the “good” bacteria living in your gut. When this happens, your whole gut “ecology” or balance can be disturbed and you can end up with diarrhea. You need to mention this to your doctor (perhaps a different antibiotic could be considered), but eating yogurt with the “good” bacteria in it (lactobacillus) or buying a compound at the pharmacy made up of lactobacillus may help. You can also talk to your pharmacist about this.

Regarding you missing a period, the first question is always –is it possible you could be pregnant? If that is not possible, it is not unusual when you are sick with an infection to skip a period or two. Again, if this has gone on for more than 3 months, you need to make sure your doctor knows what is happening. If you’re not comfortable talking to your doctor yourself, have a parent call and talk to the doctor about it.

Do you have a question?
