Q:
I’m a 13-year-old uncircumcised male. My scrotum itches on the right and left side at the bottom. It doesn't itch as much as it did a few months ago but it still itches. Is something wrong?

A:
You have not told us whether or not this itching is associated with any rash. If there is no rash perhaps you just have dry skin this area. If this is the case you should wash with a mild soap (such as Dove® or Neutrogena®) and use a moisturizing cream. Or perhaps this is just some minor irritation from perspiration and inadequate air-drying. Be sure your trousers, jeans and underpants are not too binding or tight.

If the itching is associated with a rash you could have a superficial fungus infection. This is sometimes referred to as "jock itch." This is probably the most common cause of your complaint. If this is the case you should see your pediatrician or health care provider so that you can be examined and an appropriate medication prescribed.

You did not tell us if you are having any type of sexual activity, but a complaint in this area you’re describing would not likely be caused by a sexually transmitted infection. At any rate you should see your doctor so that you can be properly evaluated and treated. It really is not possible to diagnose a skin condition accurately without a visual exam.
