Q:
I exercise a lot, and I do push ups. I'm not over weight. Actually I'm very small. I weigh 82 pounds and I'm 13. Can I hurt myself doing exercises? I already have pains in my upper back.

A:
A simple answer to your questions is - yes, you can hurt yourself doing exercises. You can hurt yourself by doing too many exercises, or by doing inappropriate exercises, or by doing exercises incorrectly. You did not say whether or not you were just starting your exercise program. Almost anyone would experience some soreness when starting a new exercise program. This is why it is very important to warm up and stretch, and to do only the number of repetitions that you can comfortably do and then gradually increase them. This is true whether you are doing push-ups, sit-ups, weight lifting, walking or running. Remember the old adage “no pain no gain” is absolutely wrong. Pain means physical stress and stress can mean damage or injury to your muscles or joints.
