Q:
I’m a 14 year-old male, 120 lbs., 5’4”. I’d like to gain significant weight for football. How can I do this?

A:
You did not tell me how physically mature you are as a 14-year-old. When did you start puberty (see below)? If you are not yet fully mature, you may have to wait for “tincture of time”. You will experience greatest muscle and strength development as you achieve sexual maturity. Actually, your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 20.5, which is excellent. It is close to ideal for health. Adding significant weight might be a problem unless you are also growing taller.

I advise you to eat a well balanced diet, get 8 to 9 hours sleep per night, and continue a good exercise program. I would avoid nutritional supplements - there is no evidence that they work or that they are safe. And by all means avoid anabolic steroids (see below). These are dangerous, cause liver disease and psychiatric disease, and weight gain from these is largely from retained fluid. You sound great. Keep up the good work.
