Q:
I want to get my cartilage at the top of my ear pierced. I've heard this can cause hearing damage. Is this true? What are some complications that can happen if you get this done?

A:
Hearing damage is unlikely from ear piercing, since the bones and nerves involved in hearing are located inside the ear.

Potential complications of piercing include infection, which is much more difficult to treat in the upper ear cartilage than in the earlobe, and keloid or scar tissue formation, which can be disfiguring.

You're not alone. Take a look at a few of the questions related to this topic that other teens have asked us.
