Q:
I've had a swollen gland on only one side of my neck for about a year. When I get a cold or strep throat it gets bigger and sore, but it never goes back to normal. It feels as big as a large marble. Is this an indication of something serious or is it possible to just have a large gland?

A:
It is possible to have a swollen gland that never seems to go away, and that enlarges during colds or throat infections. You “glands” are lymph nodes that can be located in the front or back of the neck as well as other places in your body. They serve as filtering stations for debris caused when white blood cells in your body respond to infections. In the process of doing their job, they often enlarge.

On rare occasions, a persistent swollen gland is a sign of a more serious inflammation or even a type of tumor. So the safest course would be for you to have it checked out by your doctor.
