Q:
I've been having a pounding pain in the lower left and right side of my stomach and the upper left and right side of my back. I have also had pain in my waist when I bend down. Could it be the way I sleep or something else?

A:
From your description, we can’t really tell where the pain is located. Pain that results from sleeping position usually is experienced as back pain. Because it’s the result of muscle contraction, it can be aggravated with movement. However, it usually isn’t described as “stomach” pain. Perhaps you are referring to the group of muscles on your sides. There are some types of arthritis (inflammation of joints) that begin in adolescence and affect the back and usually, but not always, other joints and might give your type of pain. Abdominal infections (pelvic, gallbladder, kidney) would be serious causes of stomach and back pain. The list of problems that cause pain in the areas you describe is so long, that it wouldn’t be safe to guess what might be causing your symptoms. We strongly suggest you give your doctor a call for advice. Some of the things that he/she will want to know include the specific location (you can point to it), duration and severity of the pain, things that make it worse (like bending over) and things that lessen it, other symptoms like vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, if the pain is crampy or constant, any changes in your urine (pain, blood), fever, weakness or unusual feeling in your legs, any new or increased level of physical activity, and whether you’ve had any trauma to your back or abdomen. It usually requires a detailed history, physical examination and often laboratory tests to accurately diagnose the cause of back and stomach pain.
