You have not given us a lot of important information necessary to answer your question. Most often hearing loss is the result of a problem such as infection or fluid in the middle ear space. This causes a “conductive” hearing loss. It can also be the result of a problem with the acoustic nerve (the VIIIth cranial nerve). This is called a “neuro-sensory” hearing loss. A comprehensive audiologic evaluation (hearing test) can easily pinpoint which of these is the problem. Your doctor should be able to tell you which of these is causing your symptoms. We assume since you are being treated with steroids that your doctors must have some idea of the source of your hearing loss. However both a conductive and a neuro-sensory loss may be treated this way by some doctors, so we can’t tell which you might have. It is most likely that your doctor knows what type of loss is involved, but perhaps does not know exactly the reason why (and therefore hasn’t given you a full explanation). This is not unusual, but serious causes should be ruled out by a CAT scan or MRI. If your doctor cannot tell you where the problem is coming from, you may want to consider asking for another opinion.
