Q:
What is a sty?

A:
A sty or hordeolum is a small abscess of the hair follicle gland at the base of the eyelash. It occurs when the gland becomes clogged with bacteria, most commonly staphylococcal. The infection is usually limited to the eyelid. Most styes drain on their own. The best treatment is to apply warm, moist compresses to the sty for 10-15 minutes three or four times a day. Using a thin layer of an antibiotic ointment, prescribed by your pediatrician, after applying the hot compress may also help. Your pediatrician should be notified if the sty does not improve within 72 hours. Some teenagers have recurrent styes because they constantly rub their eyes with dirty hands, share eye make-up or are exposed to their parent's cigarette smoke.
