Q:
Can people masturbate in their sleep? Is it abnormal?

A:
Males can certainly develop an erection and ejaculate during sleep, even without masturbation. This is called a nocturnal emission or “wet dream” and is entirely normal. Semen, the fluid containing sperm cells produced in the testicles, may stain underwear or pajamas and be mistaken for urine from bedwetting, which is not the case. Males also often awaken from sleep with an erection, a situation commonly described as “morning wood,” also unrelated to masturbation and entirely normal.
