Lupus is believed to be a disease that results from the interaction of antibodies that are made by the body against some of its own tissues. In the case of nephritis the antibodies that are produced damage cells in the kidney. Cytoxan® (cyclophosphamide) is a drug that suppresses the production of the antibodies that the body makes. It is called an “immunosuppressive” ... that is, it stops the production of antibodies (suppresses immunity). It also kills malignant cells and is used as a treatment for various cancers.
Because antibodies are needed to fight off viruses, Cytoxan® may increase your chances of getting infections (sore throats, etc). It also can have a harmful affect on pregnancies. It is very important that young women do not become pregnant while taking this medication. If you are, or plan to become, sexually active you must tell your doctor.
Cytoxan® is a very complicated medication. It is very important that at your next visit with your doctor you discuss all the questions you have about this drug. There is no substitute for a discussion with the doctor who prescribes your medication.
