Q:
I've noticed that there are stains in my underpants for the past couple of days. They're sort of clear - not yellow or green. Sometimes when I pee, it burns a little bit. I haven't been using a condom with my new sex partner - What should I do?

A:
You should go to your doctor or a public health clinic as soon as you can get there. And, don't have sex until you are treated. You probably have urethritis an infection of your urethra - the tube in your penis that goes from your bladder to the outside. Germs that get into the penis during sex can cause an infection. The body's way to fight the infection causes inflammation with lots of white blood cells. The pain and discharge (stains in your underpants) are the symptoms of the inflammation. Urethritis can be by several different organisms. Because the discharge is not colored and you don't have a lot of pain, you probably don't have gonorrhea. When you go to your doctor, he may be also to tell you that you don't have gonorrhea right then by looking for these organisms in the discharge. If he doesn't see the gonococcal germs, he will probably tell you that you have non-gonococcal urethritis (also called NGU). NGU is caused by several different germs, including chlamydia and sometimes trichomonas. The test for chlamydia takes a couple of days, but your doctor will give you a prescription for an antibiotic to treat the infection (usually doxycycline or azithromycin) right then. Your girl friend needs to be treated too, even if she doesn't have any symptoms. Condoms will prevent urethritis.
