Q:
I had my tongue pierced a while ago and was told I could continue smoking cigarettes as long as I immediately cleaned my mouth, which I did. Now I have a skin on the top of my tongue. Is this from an infection? Should I take my tongue ring out? Is there a way to get rid of it?

A:
We’re not sure what you mean by “a skin on the top of my tongue.” Infection would usually cause pain or discharge. A small piece of skin at the site of the piercing could represent scar tissue or a skin tag from the piercing itself. If you remove the tongue ring, the piercing will close, but scar tissue or a skin tag will likely remain. If it’s bothersome, see your doctor for advice.

With or without the tongue piercing, we’d like you to consider not smoking as a healthier choice.
