Learn About Height

Are you curious when you're going to start growing? Or, are you wondering when your growth spurt will be finished? We've got a few facts to help you understand the stages of growth during puberty.

Growth During Puberty

  • The physical changes of puberty (sexual development and growth) occur over 4 to 5 years for most teenagers.
  • The peak (fastest period) of the pubertal growth spurt occurs between ages 11 and 12 in girls; it occurs about 2 years later (between ages 13 and 14) in boys.
  • Girls grow between 2.5 and 4.5 inches (6-11 cm) per year at the peak of their growth spurt. Boys grow faster during their growth spurt - 3 to 5 inches (7-13 cm) per year.
  • Most girls will grow another 2.5 to 3 inches (6-7.5 cm) after their first menstrual period.
  • Growth ends when the growth plates of the bones fuse during puberty. This occurs between the ages of 13 and 15 for most girls and 14 to 17 for most boys.
